The Lord of Mercy- Doyal Nitai!

karama geyana, kichu nahi mora,
sadhana bhajana nai
tumi krpa-moya, ami to kangala,
ahaituki krpa cai

What is Bhaktivinoda Thakur saying? He is saying that just accept that you can’t do sadhana, you can’t do bhajana, you don’t have karma, you don’t have jnana, you don’t have any qualification or yogyata to attain Gauranga and Radha-Shyama. You can only consider yourself as a kangaal and as a beggar and you can start begging for ahaituki kripa means causeless mercy because there is no cause to give you mercy. Even though he himself was performing a lot of sadhana but even if you perform sadhana, you should always consider your sadhana as zero. On the strength of sadhana, you can never attain the Lord. Sadhana is to keep you disciplined. Sadhana is to teach you, you know how to engage your senses in the service of the Lord. But attainment of the Lord is impossible without mercy. And who is the Lord of mercy? Doyal Nitai! So-

heno nitai bine bhai, radha-krishna paite nai
dridha kori’ dharo nitair pay

nitaiyer charana satya, tahara sevaka nitya,
nitai-pada sada koro asa

And drdha kori dharo nitaira paya and then he is saying dharo nitaiyer charana du’ khani. And in the first line he is saying nitai-pada-kamala. This entire bhajana is you know full of Nitai’s charana. Everywhere he is first of all saying that Nitai’s Lotus feet are more cooling than millions of moons. Then he is saying without Nitai you cannot attain Radha-Krishna, so ‘catch’ Nitai’s Lotus feet. Then he is saying that when Nitai will be merciful on you, then you will automatically attain Vraja dhama, you will see the chinmaya dhama, you will see the real dhama. Your transcendental eyes, senses will awaken and you will see Radha and Krishna. braje radha-krsna pabe. So dharo nitaiyer charana du’ khani. Then he is saying that nitai-pada sada koro asa. Then in the last line he is saying narottama bodo duhkhi, nitai more koro sukhi; rakho ranga-charanera pasa. The entire bhajana means take shelter of Nitai. The entire bhajana the only crux, the jist of the bhajana is that just take shelter of Nitai. Lotus Feet means you have to take the shelter of entire Nitai. You cannot take the shelter of Lotus feet exclusively. You have to take shelter of Nitai. Narottama Dasa Thakur is saying.

He was the Supreme Personality of Godhead and He had no shame, no hesitation, no ego when he went from door to door and he was begging. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sakshat Balrama Sarva Shaktidhara, omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient, He was not having any ego in begging and we fallen souls, we vibhinamsha, tathastha shakti, badha jiva, badha souls, we have ego that too in front of the Lord. We may have ego in front of some ordinary person. But why are we having ego in front of the Supreme Personality of Godhead who had no ego in begging from us? He was begging from us and we can’t beg from Him? That is very shameful. So we should not request, we should beg Nitai.

Proof of Nitai Vayulekhan by Shrimati Radharani Herself


Govinda dasa Kaviraja, a famous Vaisnava poet, and younger brother of Ramachandra Kaviraj provides another strong proof of the potency of the written holy name. He received the title Kaviraja from none other than Shrila Jiva Goswami. He is famous for his bhajan “Bhajahu re mana, sri nanda-nandana abhaya-caranaravinda re”. In his ‘Padavali’ he wrote a beautiful bhajan describing the condition of Radharani when Krishna left Vrindavan and went to Mathura. The title of the bhajan is “Maribo Maribo Sakhi Niscoy Maribo”. In that bhajan, Shrimati Radharani requested her girlfriends to WRITE the name of Krishna on Her body. 
tomrā joteko sakhī theke majhu sange

marana kāle krishna nāma likho mora ange

“All you sakhis, that are staying with Me, please write Krsna’s name on My body as I die.”
Shrimati Radharani Herself is establishing the glories of the process of writing the holy names of the Lord. She is revealing that the written holy name of the Lord is as good as the Lord Himself. A pure devotee always desires that when he leaves the body he should have the highest remembrance of the Lord. Here, Shrimati Radharani is also talking about her impending death due to extreme pain of separation from Krishna. And what is her desire at the time of death? Her desire is that Krishna’s name be WRITTEN on her body. She deems it the highest kind of remembrance as when Krishna’s name will be written on her body, it will be as good as receiving the direct touch of Krishna. What more proof does anyone want?

Unique mercy of Nitai

🌺 Shrila Bhaktirakshak Shridhar Goswami Maharaj gives a great example to describe the unique mercy of Nitai. He says that when you a go to a particular department of a hospital and they refuse to admit you then you go to another department. You go to that department which is more accommodating. Similarly, we all are suffering from material disease since time immemorial and we need proper treatment now. We may directly go to Gaur-Krishna but He may refuse to admit us. He has hundreds of valid reasons to reject us. However, Nitai is the most accommodating Lord. He does not refuse to treat any soul. Even if there are hundreds and thousands of reasons to reject someone, Nitai would invariably ignore all such reasons and embrace a soul who approaches Him.

Important discussion on Nitai and Radha

If somebody asks you, “Who is the topmost devotee of Krishna?” What shall be your response? If you say Nitai is the topmost then he may ask, “What about Radharani?” And if you say Radha is the topmost then he may ask, “What about Nitai?” Is it not confusing? Numerous times we have heard that there is no greater devotee of Krishna than Radha and the same we have heard about Nitai innumerable times. It indeed a very mysterious question. Let us understand the relationship between Nitai-Krishna and Radha-Krishna in greater detail to demystify the question at hand.

Nitai is the existential potency (sandhini) of Krishna and is also the first manifestation of the vaibhava feature of Krishna. Thus, He falls in the Vishnu Tattva category and assumes the role of the Supreme Personality of Godhead as Krishna’s elder brother. On the other hand, Radha is the pleasure potency (hladini) of Krishna and assumes the role of the Lord’s dearmost consort. 

When we consider Nitai-Krishna relationship, we address Nitai as Sevak Bhagwan (the Supreme Personality of Servitor Godhead) and Krishna as Sevya Bhagwan (the Supreme Personality of Godhead who is served by Nitai). 
As far as Radha-Krishna relationship is concerned, Radharani is described as the topmost Ashraya Vigraha (topmost reservoir of devotion for Krishna) and Krishna as the Supreme Vishaya Vigraha (Radha’s supreme object of devotion). 
Even though both Nitai and Radha are devotees, there is a categorical distinction between them. In short, it is a well understood fact that only like terms can be compared. So Nitai and Radha can never be compared as they belong to their own unique categories. Nitai is the topmost sevak and Radha is the topmost ashraya-vigraha. A ‘Sevak’ and an ‘ Ashraya-vigraha’, each can be addressed as a ‘devotee’. Thus, Nitai can also be called the topmost devotee and Radha can also be glorified as the topmost devotee. It is not at all contradictory. 
The only point to remember is that simply by doing ‘seva’ of the ‘Sevak’ Bhagwan Nitai one gets ‘Ashraya’ of the ‘Ashraya Vigraha’ Radha. If you don’t agree then read how Shrila Krishnadas Kaviraj Goswami got Radha’s ashraya just by defending Nitai’s supreme position in front of his brother. Service of Nitai is done by pleasing one’s spiritual master, serving the devotees of Nitai, spreading the glories of Nitai, taking shelter of Nitai’s name, form, pastimes, etc., and last but not least, moving one’s finger in the air to do Nitai Vayulekhan. 🙏😊

Bhakti – Devotional Service is Nitai and Radha


Bhakti is translated as ‘devotional service’ by Shrila Prabhupad. Shrimati Radharani is the embodiment of ‘devotion’ and Nitai Balaram is the embodiment of ‘service’. Thus, whenever we come across the phrase “devotional service” we must remember Nitai and Radha. This, also means that Bhakti is nothing but Nitai and Radha. 🙏😊

PROOF: For the fallen souls, Nitai is more merciful than even Radha!

Devotees in our Gaudiya Vaishnav dhara often neglect Nitai Balaram as they are fully convinced that the worship of Radha is the highest. Yes, the loving service of Radhika is highest but is it relevant to us even in our fallen state? As long as one has not overcome Maya completely, how can one engage oneself in the loving service of Radharani? 

Radharani is the personification of the superior pleasure potency of the Lord and Durga represents the inferior or external potency. Those who are fully surrendered souls can transcend the inferior energy and secure their position under Shrimati Radhika. 

daivi hy esa guna-mayi

mama maya duratyaya

mam eva ye prapadyante

mayam etam taranti te

“This external energy of Mine, which consists of the three modes and which bewilders the living entities, is certainly very difficult to overcome, but those who take exclusive shelter of Me can easily transcend this mäyä.” (Bhagwad Gita 7.14)
As a matter of fact, if one is fully surrendered then one becomes a liberated soul. Thus, Shrimati Radhika has a connection with the liberated souls and not the eternally conditioned fallen souls. 
However, Nitai Balaram is the personification of the Sandhini shakti which manifests both the material as well as the spiritual creation. (1) Nitai Balaram only is the origin of all souls and (2) He alone has a connection with the fallen souls even in a non-surrendered, non-liberated, and degraded state as the supersoul.
Let me provide proofs for the above statements:
1 Shrila Bhaktisidhhant Saraswati Thakur writes, 
“The dissociable individual soul is distinct from the divine categories. He is a particle of the marginal potency of the divinity. Shri Nityananda who is identical with Balarama is the ultimate source of the jiva. The conditioned soul is a particle of the marginal potency, who has been sent into this world by the will of the Purusa, viz., Vishnu reposing in the Causal Ocean, who is a plenary part of Nityananda exercising the divine function of creator of all mundane existence including the conditioned state without Himself belonging to the mundane plane.” (Source: Marginal Potency, Associates of Shri Chaitanya)

2 Shri Chaitanya Charitamrita, Adi Lila, 5.109:

yasyāṁśāṁśāṁśaḥ parātmākhilānāṁ

poṣṭā viṣṇur bhāti dugdhābdhi-śāyī

kṣauṇī-bhartā yat-kalā so ’py anantas

taṁ śrī-nityānanda-rāmaṁ prapadye

“I offer my respectful obeisances unto the feet of Śrī Nityānanda Rāma, whose secondary part (a portion of a portion of a plenary portion) is the Viṣṇu lying in the ocean of milk. That Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu is the Supersoul of all living entities and the maintainer of all the universes. Śeṣa Nāga is His further subpart.”
So, we have a connection with Nitai even in our present degraded state where we are too rebellious to surrender. Nitai still accompanies us always in the form of the supersoul. In this deadly material world, we are alone. Our only companion is Nitai. How can we neglect His worship and jump directly to the worship of Shrimati Radharani? Radharani is only available in the spiritual world whereas Nitai is there for us when we are still in the material world. Radharani does not expand in the form of the supersoul to give us company. Nitai does that. Nitai awards us higher spiritual bliss which enables us to overcome the temptations of Maya. Nitai comes in the form of Guru to teach us how to surrender. He overwhelms us with so much mercy that we are naturally compelled to surrender. And as soon as we surrender, He hands us over to Shrimati Radhika. He only makes us fit for the service of Shrimati Radhika. By showering His unparalleled affection upon us, He purifies us in His own way without causing any pain. He completely cures our material disease at its root and transforms us into liberated souls fit for coming in touch with the superior pleasure potency of Gaur-Krishna.

Actually, Gaur and Radhey Shyam are blissfully busy in Their eternal pastimes in Golok. It is only Nitai who extends Himself to the material world and paves the way for us to enter Golok. It is only Him who is truly concerned about us. And as Sadhakas when we take up the process of chanting the Holy Names, He only causes the Supreme Lord Gaur-Krishna to descend upon our tongue as the Suddha-Nam. Thus, He takes us to Golok when we leave this material world and He brings Golokpati (Gaur-Krishna) to us as long as we are still in the material world.

samsarera para hai’ bhaktira sagare

ye dubibe se bhajuk nitai-candere

One who would cross over the ocean of material existence and swim in
the bhakti ocean should worship the lotus feet of Nityananda.

Thus our spiritual master Shrila Nitaipreshthji raises his arms and loudly proclaims:

“Only Nitai! Only Nitai! Only Nitai!”

What to speak of conditioned souls, even eternally liberated souls, even Manjaris, received everything by the mercy of Nitai in their worldly pastimes. 

I would like to conclude with the most enlightening words of Shrila Bhaktisiddhant Saraswati Thakur, 
“Shrimati Radhika is the guru of the inner circle of the servants of Krishna. Shrimati, however, accepts the offer of service of only those souls who are specially favored by Nityananda and are deemed by Him to be fit for Her service. There is, therefore a most intimate relationship between the function of Nityananda and that of Shrimati which is at once supplementary and inclusive of the former.” (Source: Shrimati Radhika, Associates of Shri Chaitanya)
